Soul in a Bowl (SIAB) is part of Soul Kitchen. It is a weekly cooking session for those who are homeless or in temporary accommodation for around 6/7 people supported by volunteers. Currently there are 2 sessions in Chester and one in Ellesmere Port. In the sessions we provide the recipes and ingredients to cook a two course meal. Sharing the meal together afterwards is very rewarding.
The aims of the SIAB project include:
Creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all users and supporters
Providing the opportunity to learn to cook and develop kitchen skills
Developing self confidence and the ability to work as part of a team
Developing cost awareness and budgeting skills
It also provides the opportunity to socialise and chat, spending time in the day achieving something positive.
As a support volunteer you would be expected to:
Meet and work with the attendees in a positive and friendly manner
Oversee, facilitate and assist with cooking activities as required
Spend time being available to chat and support anyone during the session
Sit down and eat the meal prepared in the session with everyone at the session
Clean and tidy up the venue before leaving for the day
Wash and return the used laundry from the session (within a few days)
Lead volunteers at each session will be expected to shop for ingredients for the days session ( reimbursed)
The usual time commitment is between 12 at the venue until approx 3.30pm.
Currently Soul in a Bowl operates Monday 12-3.30 in Ellesmere Port and Tuesday & Thursday 12-3.30 at Northgate Church, Chester.
